After he traveled overseas and had to leave his family behind, junior Macy Su’s father kept in touch with his wife, Macy’s mom and , through hundreds of handwritten letters. According to macy, they chose to write letters instead because they thought it was a luxury to have.

While cleaning out an old closet on Aug. 9, Macy came across a box with over 600 letters inside. When she found them, she took a few photos and tweeted some more later that day.

“I thought it was a cute story and something worth sharing,” Macy said.

The next morning, Macy checked her twitter and realized she had almost 20,000 likes and almost 10,000 retweets.

“It finally hit me like, ‘Okay I’m actually Twitter famous, what the heck,’” Macy said.

Throughout the next couple of days, the numbers kept soaring. As of Sept. 24, the tweet is at 142,000 likes and 47,400 retweets.

Magazines, newspapers and celebrities, such as Paris Hilton and Steve Harvey, have reached out to Macy for her take on the story so they could write their own story on it.

“I totally freaked out when all of this happened and I completely lost it when Paris Hilton direct messaged me,” Macy said.

Her parents aren’t active on social media, but they were especially curious and intrigued about Macy going viral on twitter.

“They’d check in every couple of minutes and ask, ‘What are the retweets and likes at now?,’” Macy said.

Macy didn’t know people at school had seen her tweet.

“A girl didn’t really talk to or I didn’t even know came up to me and were like, ‘OH MY GOSH, You’re that girl with the parents who sent love letters,’” Macy said. “It’s mind-blowing because I didn’t know this girl at all before school, yet she knew me and so did a bunch of other people.”

This was a once in lifetime opportunity for Macy and her family. She got a chance to talk to people over over the world and even found a new friend in Brazil.

“It’s so crazy because one of the top things on my bucket list was to go viral,” Macy said. “It didn’t change my life, but it did give me so many opportunities I would’ve never dreamed of.”
